WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2020 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced the appointment of six members and seven alternates to serve on the National Peanut Board. The appointees will serve three-year terms, from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2023, with the exceptions of the Missouri appointees whose terms will begin immediately and will end Dec. 31, 2022, and the At-Large alternate appointee whose term will begin immediately and will end Dec. 31, 2021.
Members appointed are:
- Alabama: Tom Corcoran (Member) and Thomas Adams (Alternate)
- Florida: William T. Carte (Member) and Nick Marshall (Alternate)
- Mississippi: Lonnie Fortner (Member) and Alan Atkins (Alternate)
- Missouri: Clay Deane (Member) and Russ Hoggard (Alternate)
- North Carolina: Ray Garner (Member) and Julie M. Ward (Alternate)
- Virginia: Paul Rogers (Member) and Westley Barnes Drake (Alternate)
- At-Large: Lucy Lacey Shackelford (Alternate)
The board is comprised of 13 producer members and their alternates. Twelve members and alternates are from the primary peanut producing states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. An at-large member and alternate represent the minor peanut producing states.

Since 1966, Congress has authorized the development of industry-funded research and promotion boards to provide a framework for agricultural industries to pool their resources and combine efforts to develop new markets, strengthen existing markets and conduct important research and promotion activities. AMS provides oversight of 21 boards, paid for by industry assessments, which helps ensure fiscal accountability and program integrity.
