TIFTON, Ga – Carl Hood, Midville, Georgia, received the Outstanding Georgia Peanut Farmer of the Year Award for District 3 at the 49th annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show and Conference, Jan. 15, 2026, at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center, Tifton, Georgia. The award is sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission and Agri Supply.
The Georgia Peanut Commission presents the Outstanding Georgia Peanut Farmer of the Year award to one farmer in each of the commission’s five districts. This award is designed to honor farmers who have given life-long devotion to peanut farming and who have the passion, diligence, leadership and desire to see that the peanut industry in the state of Georgia continues to represent the highest quality possible.
Hood began farming in 1968 as a farm manager for a large row crop and livestock farm in East Georgia. In a couple of years, Hood and his wife, Anne, developed an opportunity to farm on their own when they bought 207 acres, which is now referred to as the homeplace in Canoochee, Georgia.
Over the years, Hood stayed on the lookout for additional farms to buy and expanded over the next several decades. Through that course, three of his sons came home intermittently over the years to farm alongside him and helped him keep the operation viable and growing, even through some really hard economic times. Hood now considers himself officially retired and has turned the reins over to his youngest son, Clay, but still keeps tabs on the operation and makes sure the management pencil stays sharp.
Always one to stay on the farm and work, Hood did recognize during the 80’s that he could contribute to helping influence young, beginner farmers to get started through the FmHA programs. He looks back with pride at that time and is glad he made the effort to make a positive impact on the industry.
Hood is a member and owner of Producers Peanut Buying Point in Bartow and Premium Peanut in Douglas. He served as county chairman of the ASCS board and Farmer’s Home Administration in Emanuel County during the 1980s. Hood was also involved with 4-H, Emanuel County Young Famers and Emanuel County Farm Bureau. In fact, he is a Master 4-Her and won the Georgia State Tractor Driving Contest in the 50s. He also won awards through the Georgia Moneymaker Club.
Today, his son, Clay manages the farm which includes 2,000 acres of peanuts, cotton, corn, soybeans and hay, along with beef cattle and pigs.
Hood is married to Anne and they have 5 children, Clint, Chip, Chris, Clay and Suzanne, as well as 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Additional district winners include District 1 – Willard Mims, Donalsonville; District 2 – Jones Brothers Farms, Chula; District 4 – Keith Moore, Cordele; and District 5 – Rodney Locke, Dawson. These farmers received a sign to display at their farm and gift cards from Agri Supply and the Georgia Peanut Commission.
