Many are surprised to discover the peanut is actually not a nut at all. In fact, it is a legume and belongs to the pea family. Unlike most plants, the peanut plant flowers above the ground, but fruits below ground. Although its many names such as goober, groundnut, monkey nut, and earth nut lead you to believe otherwise, it is in fact a legume.
